Portugal is famed as a golf holiday region. It is almost unfair that so many World Class, championship golf venues exist in one country all of which are available for amateur golfers to play during their golf holiday. These are golf courses that regularly host PGA Tour events and whose fairways are in “better nick” than our home club’s greens. Here locations trip off the tongue with ease, even for those who only claim a passing interest in the sport. Golf San Lorenzo, Pennina, Val do Lobo, Vilamoura, Quinta da Lago, Penha Longa, Troia et al; immaculate designs, perfectly maintained and a delight to play even for the serious duffers amongst us. Add to this a climate tailor made for golf and you really have little reason to go elsewhere. And so we return again and again.
Too good to be true? Not really. For years golfers from all over Europe have made their annual pilgrimage here, staying at the many fine hotels, playing the aforementioned golf courses and venturing out afterwards to enjoy the great nightlife. As the sports popularity spreads, more and more continue to come - so much so that Portuguese airport baggage carousels in March are little more than revolving displays of newly arrived golf bags. When will breaking point be reached? Not for some time it appears as new golf courses continue to open. Furthermore, the Portuguese authorities value golf tourism and are doing their very best to keep it.
When you mention golf and Portugal in the same breath, most people assume it's the Algarve you are talking about (probably because there is so much terrific golf to be found there). But golf in Portugal is not all about the Algarve - there are plenty of rich pickings elsewhere, particularly within
striking distance of Lisbon the country's trendy and vibrant capital. For sheer beauty, and a perfect example of what is to be found beyond the Algarve, it's hard to imagine a golf course that can beat the Atlantic Course at Penha Longa - breath-taking views of the ocean with Estoril and Cascais to the south and the Sintra Hills to the north. And Penha Longa is not alone in these parts; there are plenty of others.
Algarve or Lisbon? It’s a case of take your pick.
